Inner-City Barra

Post by Marrakai » Sun Sep 18, 2011 11:17 pm

Well, all good things come to an end, and the Larrakeyah Lunch-hour swoff is no more!
When my final contract ended a couple of months ago, access to this marvellous land-based fishing spot was lost.

After pining for a while, I deduced that if the fish were feeding along the Larrakeyah shoreline, then they may be spilling over into the adjacent Cullen Bay area.
So....
picking the best barra tides for the month, I spent an hour or so wading the public swimming beach in the shadow of high-rise apartments and bayside restaurants, making a fool of myself with the long wand.

I am happy to report that a modicum of success was the result.
In fact, at least as good, and in some ways better than any single lunch-hour I ever had at Larrakeyah!

Now to try a few more potential land-based swoffing spots I've had my eye on around the CBD.....

Hopefully for more of these! Image

Great result Marrakai, looks like you're a fly convert, no going back to the lures? If you decide to return to lure fishing, let me know, you can field test one of my Barraguru Lures.
Regards, Tony.

Diemai:
Yes, thank you for pointing out how lucky we are here in Australia's 'Top End'.
The 7- to 8-metre tidal range often gives the illusion of the city being miles away when wading at low tide.

I just looked at the Darwin CBD-Larrakeyah-Cullen Bay area on Google Earth, and it really leaps out-
there is still a big percentage of open space and undeveloped land right in the middle of the city.
Unfortunately it is disappearing fast, so best to enjoy it while we can!
I certainly intend to make the most of it.

Thanks for the Youtube links too, just goes to show that keen anglers will find fish anywhere!
Cheers

..and yes, Tony, with an hour to kill by myself I find I am reaching for the flyrod.
Still lure-fish occasionally (..the 'Dark Side'!) when in other people's boats or with more than one additional fisho in mine.

Of course, this means more incentive to leave those marvellous vintage lures in the display-cabinet where they belong! Image

@ Marakai

7 to 8 metres tide lift , ....that's a lot !

I don't like fishing tidal waters too much , ........see how that guy in the video is suffering there at low tide in the harbor of Hamburg lol !

When I'm casting lures in town I much prefer the inner city lake in the other video , ......right at that spot shown one of my homemade sinking gliders found it's eternal rest last year lol !

Marrakai, PM me your home address and I'll drop a little something in your letter box, next time I'm passing. If you don't use, you can keep in your collection.
Regards Tony.
