Lure colours - how do you select?

Post by anselmo » Mon May 25, 2009 11:08 pm

As in when you're buyinga lure you've never had before how do you pick?

Personally I like to buy lures in sets of 3:

1 x natural/dull
1 x bright/fluoro
1 x metallic

I find these 3 rough colour options cover pretty much any situation
Though not all (luckily!) hence the "bottom drawer" or as my wife calls it - Aladdins cave assy

i always run or try to match the hatch especially for trout bream mulloway cod etc most fish feed on silver coloured fish silver/black so this is always a go to lure.My cow pattern is a heavy contrast lure and tends to draw attention to it what ever the fish species but callop and freshwater fish particularaly love this contrast.
For sal i like the same but more mullet colours like the one in the picture,,,these are the common colour food source of 99 percent of the fish here.
BUT and this is a big but many other colours also work for salt browns, greens, pure blacks and purple and red are always winners but when not sure i will always go back to the food source colours....

the colours shown are my favourite patterns both fresh and salt my two best would be the blue/white and black/silver patterns and fresh trout, cow, brown and frog patterns

Bass - Grey Ghost during the day - black jitterbugs after dark
Cod - Purple or Yellow/Black
Estuary - Fluro's - Yellow or Pink

Agree with Mully, find what they're eating & find something close is usually the best way

Start of with something that matches the water colour, then go for contrast typically darker or something thats clear and opaque thumbsupsmilie thumbsupsmilie

That would be nice but after trying for 12 months to buy a spair i found that the only color K Mart Mildura stock is the R3 so i have 1 or 2 spair. Also done well on green-black codger and have spairs as well. Still like the polti beter. thumbsupsmilie thumbsupsmilie

Being colourblind I'm not qualified to comment on colours. btme farter

However I usually always buy at least two of the same lure as there's nothing worse than losing a lure that's working without having a spare. thumbsupsmilie thumbsupsmilie

If I come across a dynamite pattern I save my very meagre allowance and buy as many as I can find yay yay yay wwnk
